Portside’s 1% Back to Maine initiative is proud to highlight the many incredible organizations receiving funding this year. These grants support projects that fight food insecurity, create safe spaces for youth, and build stronger communities across Maine.
Cumberland County
The mission of Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program is to offer dignity and empowerment by providing all members of the community with access to healthy food. With $9,000 from 1% back, they are establishing an in-school food pantry in Lisbon, serving students, families, and staff who may otherwise go without reliable access to meals. Androscoggin County
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maine has inspired and enabled young individuals to reach their full potential as caring, productive citizens. With $10,000 in funding, the Auburn club will renovate its kitchen and add a commercial dishwasher, improving efficiency and ensuring food-insecure elementary-aged youth have consistent access to healthy and reliable meals. United Youth Empowerment Services (UnitedYES) seeks to provide immigrant and refugee youth with resources, safe spaces, leadership development opportunities, and pathways to future success.. Veggies to Table grows top-quality organic produce and flowers for donation to local families experiencing hunger, while modeling sustainable agriculture and building connections across communities. Their mission goes beyond providing nourishment, by combining healthy food, environmental stewardship, and the simple joy of flowers, Veggies to Table is creating lasting connections and spreading hope for widespread hunger throughout the Midcoast. Wayfinder Schools provides at-risk youth and teen parents with the skills, support, and education needed to thrive and graduate with a high school diploma. With $10,000 in funding, they will expand arts, life skills, outdoor education opportunities, and build brighter futures for students across multiple Maine counties.
