Portside's Generous Support: Transforming Lives at Tedford Housing with a New Outdoor Recreation Area

Tedford Housing, a vital organization dedicated to providing emergency shelter, supportive housing, and homelessness prevention services, is pleased to announce a new initiative made possible by a generous $7,500 grant from Portside’s 1% Back to Maine program. This grant will fund the construction of a much-needed outdoor recreation area, including a playground, at Tedford’s newly established emergency shelter for families.

This outdoor space is more than just a playground—it represents a lifeline for families who are working to rebuild their lives after experiencing homelessness. The new area will serve as a dynamic and safe environment where children and their parents can find respite, engage in play, and connect with one another in meaningful ways. Designed to accommodate up to ten families at a time, this recreation space is a crucial part of Tedford’s commitment to fostering well-being and community support for those navigating the difficult path from homelessness to stable housing.

As Development and Communication Associate Katrina Webster explains, “Thanks to the generous support from Portside, Tedford Housing’s new emergency shelter will feature a transformative outdoor recreation area that will greatly benefit the families residing there. This dynamic play area will provide a safe and engaging space for children and caregivers, offering opportunities for emotional growth, learning, and family bonding. In turn, this will reduce stress and enhance the quality of life for those who are working towards a more stable future.”

The addition of this play area is a significant step in Tedford’s mission to not only provide shelter but also create an environment that nurtures the mental and emotional well-being of families during a time of transition.
