Get Ready for the Lake!

As the ice melts and the days stretch longer, it’s time to turn your attention back to camp. Opening up your lake house for the season is more than just a checklist, it’s a ritual that marks the start of summer living in Maine. Whether you’re a seasoned lake homeowner or new to the rhythm of camp life, a thoughtful approach can set the tone for months of relaxation and connection.

Inside the Camp

  • Turn on water and check for leaks (sinks, toilets, outdoor spigots)
  • Inspect for any winter damage (ceilings, windows, floors)
  • Open windows to air things out
  • Wipe down surfaces and clean out cupboards
  • Wash linens, blankets, and towels
  • Test appliances (fridge, stove, hot water heater)
  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Restock essentials (paper goods, pantry basics, cleaning supplies)
  • Set up cozy touches—throws, books, a stocked coffee station

Outside the Camp

  • Walk the property and look for storm or winter damage
  • Inspect roof, gutters, and siding
  • Set up outdoor furniture and clean cushions
  • Check and clean the grill
  • Inspect the dock (boards, hardware, stability)
  • Put in or secure moorings and boats
  • Rake out fire pit area and restock firewood
  • Clear pathways and trim overgrowth
  • Test outdoor lighting
  • Make sure life jackets and safety gear are in good condition
