Opening up your lake house for the season is more than just a checklist, it’s a ritual that marks the start of summer living in Maine. Whether you’re a seasoned lake homeowner or new to the rhythm of camp life, a thoughtful approach can set the tone for months of relaxation and connection.
Inside the Camp
- Turn on water and check for leaks (sinks, toilets, outdoor spigots)
- Inspect for any winter damage (ceilings, windows, floors)
- Open windows to air things out
- Wipe down surfaces and clean out cupboards
- Wash linens, blankets, and towels
- Test appliances (fridge, stove, hot water heater)
- Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Restock essentials (paper goods, pantry basics, cleaning supplies)
- Set up cozy touches—throws, books, a stocked coffee station
Outside the Camp
- Walk the property and look for storm or winter damage
- Inspect roof, gutters, and siding
- Set up outdoor furniture and clean cushions

- Put in or secure moorings and boats
- Rake out fire pit area and restock firewood
