Summer in New England feels different because everything that makes summer memorable exists within reach. In Maine and New Hampshire, you can spend the morning kayaking through quiet coves in Casco Bay, hike above the trees in Franconia Notch State Park that afternoon, and end the night eating seafood by the water with a sweatshirt on because the air finally cooled down.
You can paddle across lakes so calm they reflect the mountains perfectly, swim in cold freshwater surrounded by pine trees, or take long drives through back roads. Birdwatching means bald eagles on the coast, loons calling across inland lakes, and puffins farther north off the Maine islands. Hiking ranges from easy waterfall trails to ridgelines that feel almost alpine, especially in the White Mountains and western Maine.
Then there are the towns themselves! Harbor mornings in Camden, summer evenings in Portsmouth, lobster shacks, farm stands, sailboats in the harbor, and old downtowns that actually feel lived in instead of built for tourists. Even something simple like getting coffee before a hike or watching the sunset after a swim feels cinematic here in a way that’s hard to explain until you’ve experienced it.
A lot of places have beaches, and a lot of places have mountains. Very few places have both, plus forests, islands, lakes, cool nights, and access to unique nature. People travel across the country trying to experience this version of summer, while for us, we get to experience it every day.
This summer, enjoy New England and approach every day like it is a vacation. Take in the daily beauty and take full advantage of the outdoors!
