We are thrilled to provide you with an update on our 1% for Maine® efforts. For Q2, our initiative was Education; we committed to devoting our money to organizations focused on providing extra support and opportunities, both in and out of the classroom to Maine’s children to ensure that they have the tools and skills they need to succeed. The strength of the spring real estate market helped to increase our donation amount and we ended up having $52,000 to divide among many wonderful grants. After much consideration, we chose to support seven different nonprofits in three Maine counties.
The second grant we chose to support was one submitted by The Ecology School. Here are the quick details:
Organization Mission: The Ecology School’s mission is to inspire stewardship of—and connection to—the natural world through experiential learning in ecology, conservation, farming, and sustainability.
Grant Mission: To support our award-winning EcosySTEMTM program. According to the Child Mind Institute, the average American child spends 4-7 minutes per day outside enjoying nature, and 7 hours per day in front of a screen. At The Ecology School, those numbers are flipped. EcosySTEMTM helps underserved students from Maine to engage in nature while enjoying nutritious meals.
As schools return to more in person learning this year, The Ecology School will work closely with our EcosySTEMTM partners to provide in-school programs to support both the curricular and social and emotional needs of students. We anticipate that by the end of next school year we will work with all of our EcosySTEMTM schools again (including 3,200 students in Saco and Biddeford). In order to meet that bench mark, we will have reengaged with at least half by the middle of the year.
Over 50% of students attending this program are eligible for free or reduced lunch based on household income levels below the poverty line. Their residential capstone experience provides them with several nutritious meals served family-style as part of their attendance. EcosySTEMTM programs offer an opportunity for students to experience local ecosystems often for the first time.
Grant Money Allocated: $10,000
